On January 24th, 1848 a man named James Marshall uttered the words: "Boys, I have got her now!" He was referring to the gold nuggets he had picked up out of a stream at Coloma, California. By 1849 more than 100,00 people -"49ers"- had flodded into the California gold fields and established the "Golden Chain" of communities along what is now historic Highway 49. Near the southern end of this gold rush trail is the old community of Mariposa County, the home of Miner's Mix. The town of Mariposa is the county seat here, and also home to a treasure trove of gold rush history. Here one can find the only California State Park that has no real estate; the California State Mining and Mineral Museum. Mariposa also boasts the Mariposa Museum and History Center, to whom we owe many thanks for some of the pictures on our site. We believe you'll find Mariposa County an interesting place to visit! |
The gold rush is still very much a part of our home here, and there are many places and things to see. One might start at the visitor center. Adventurers would be interested in knowing about the mines that honeycomb our mountain home - like the Wildcat Mines of the Motherlode or other mines of the Sierras. Perhaps one might take a ride on the Sugar Pine Railroad, or perhaps tour one of the many Ghost Towns that dot the mountains. |
The Gold Country is a wonderful place to visit, with four distinct seasons and weather patterns, and alot to see and do. Here you will find a real small town feel with a focus on local events, and local communities. |
And, of course, all of Mariposa County sits in the shadow of one of the most beautiful places on earth: Yosemite National Park. There is much to do in and around the park during your invstigation into our gold rush heritage. |
Mariposa County is rich in history, and is a part of the geneology of the American West. If you'd like to know more, visit us, or you may want to do some more reading. We recommend the Gold Rush Sesquicentennial, the Legends of America, and Rusted Fables, and The Legend of Joshua Shelby. |
During your wanderings, keep an eye out at local stores for Miner's Mix Products! Old Josh Shelby would be mighty grateful. We recommend one or two other local business as well - pardners of ours! Just point the 'ol browser to: |
